T15g Gen 1 won't easily start

#1 Post by Scared_Calendar » Sat Jul 20, 2024 5:09 am

Black screen, no beeps, running coolers. Num lock does not respond. Apparently it can't get past POST for some reason.

What is interesting, sometimes it starts, sometimes it does not. And when it starts, then all BIOS tests are successful (even those running for hours), as well as Vantage tests.

From what I can understand, it won't start if it is warm (been working before that moment). Or if the environment is warm. But If I place it under Air Cooler for some time, then it will most probably start.

And if it starts, then I can use it with no issues as long as I need it, working/gaming, any heavy workload. Everything is ok. No any hiccups. Until shut down. Then it will not boot up immediately after that :)
Until it is properly cooled.

What is interesting, temperature readings (checking with HWiNFO64) are ok while it is running. 50-60C while idling, and some spikes to 100-104C while on heavy duty. Obviously those spikes are being throttled. Cooling system is working as expected.

Nevertheless it seems that POST fails due to thermal sensing.

I wonder if there is something I can do.

60c idle temperature is abnormal. Clean heatsink and apply new thermal paste. PTM7950 is recommended.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Already did that. Got better readings for temp. but nevertheless did not solve the issue with starting/POST

Looks like I was wrong regarding incorrect thermal sensing. Yesterday It was not able to boot while was cold as an ice brick. Tried a few time, even placed it under Air Conditioner for some time. Won't boot. Tried a few more times. Won't boot.
Disconnected it from power source and tried again. No luck as well.

Then I decided to initiate an emergency reset (backside hole) while it was running dead (black screen, noisuly running coolers). Bingo! Next boot was successful.

The same happened today. It was not able to boot successfully until I gave him an emergency reset.

Any ideas?

Can you boot when you remove the HDD/SSD?
Maybe a faulty drive, or bad Windows?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

enabled hibernation yesterday (did not use it before), put it to hibernation. pushed power button, won't boot up, as usual
tried a good dozen of times, with emergency reset as well, did not help. then I left it off for the night. in the morning could get it booted from the first attempt.

There was a slim hope that new firmware would solve this issue. Updated with 1.39 yesterday. The issue persists.

from my understanding it does not even get close to booting windows. it fails P.O.S.T for some reason.

normally you would expect beeps or some sort of error messages when it fails P.O.S.T if there is something wrong with any component - disk, ram, whatever
but in this case there are no any indications of what is failing

For ones curious about follow up on my story. The problem is with video card. And from what I was told, it got damaged from overheating.

Well, that is not cheap. But I have to order somewhere a replacement.

Can anyone enlighten me on how to find out replacement options, knowing my serial number and model number?
