can T16 Gen 3 fit an SSD with heatsink?

#1 Post by scottmlew » Sat Oct 05, 2024 1:07 pm

I am looking at adding a Samsung 990 PRO with heatsink to a new T16 Gen 3. Does anyone know if there is room to accommodate the extra thickness of the heatsink?

I doubt it. Most models have a heatsink/bracket from factory, so you can't put anything over it.

But you can try to simply remove the bracket and put your heatsink instead. The M.2 screw goes directly to the drive, so the bracket is an after-thought. If I remember correctly, it's supported on one side by some rubber part attached to the slot itself with double sided tape. There is some risk that it'll come off with vibration, though.

Myself, I wouldn't risk having the heatsink to come off. Just use a regular drive with the provided bracket.

@mikemex, thanks for the reply. You are correct, it doesn't fit...I was coming here to post that when I saw your reply.

The 990 PRO with heatsink does NOT fit the T16 Gen 3. Looking at the space available, I'd be surprised if any SSD with a heatsink fits, but I haven't done an exhaustive search of all possible options. The good news is that I am seeing great performance (with no apparent throttling) from a regular 990 PRO.

The T16 Gen 3 doesn't seem to have any kind of bracket for the M.2 drive, fwiw.
