building NAS server, any suggestions?
building NAS server, any suggestions?
I am planning to build a NAS server for home use. Any suggestions?
I plan to buy a used desktop and then put about at least two hard drives. Anybody knows a good used desktop, like which model? I know I would definately avoid compaq.

Anything pretty much works. Better quality hardware the better off you are.
I have a Beige Apple G3 (from 98) that has been a file server since 2002 without incident. Solid as a rock, though eventually due to retire, thanks to a 266MHz processor.

If you don't need a lot of features this will run on some obsolete hardware.

I've just been using OS X Client.... any UNIX os is more than fine. Samba, Apache, PureFTPD, LukeFTP or whatever you prefer is just fine.
I've got MRTG graphs of network traffic, file storage, even had VPN going for a while (though problems due to age of hardware forced me to turn it off).
