Intel 13th and 14th Gen Problems
I been hearing about the Intel problem and wondering if this affects all Intel Core i series or overclocked i9 for 13th/14th gen. My New "Last year now" Dell Inspiron 3020 has an i5 13th gen. I recently did an update "Windows updates" and when it restarted I logged into Windows 11 and the screen went black but could hear a bing noise when I clicked the mouse. So, I restarted and the display showed up again and back on. Not sure if that was windows or the integrated graphics "Intel". From watching a few videos, system manufactures are releasing a bios update to put a bandage on the processor problem. Intel says there isn't any recalls. If my processor does go to crap will the 12th gen work? I heard 12th, 13th and 14th Gen are the same socket.
If it is an overheating problem, I just have this machine for online web use and billing and if somewhere in the future if would be required to have a new Windows "11 or 12" to access programs, I have a new machine then. I don't think I could play games on it as it has I think around a 200W PSU. It is just a run of the mill basic desktop.

Re: Intel 13th and 14th Gen Problems
I just checked the Dell update software, and it came up with an update for Intel CPU management bios update 7/9/2024. So, I am running the update now.
If this is a bad batch of CPUs for all 13th and 14th gen, then laptop owners are going to have it the worse as the CPU in laptops today are soldered in. I only have up to 8th gen for my laptops.

Re: Intel 13th and 14th Gen Problems
AFAIK, only desktop CPUs are affected (according to current research and information released by Intel).ThinkPad560X wrote: ↑Sun Aug 04, 2024 11:19 pmIf this is a bad batch of CPUs for all 13th and 14th gen, then laptop owners are going to have it the worse as the CPU in laptops today are soldered in. Re: Intel 13th and 14th Gen Problems
Excerpt from Ars Technica article:
Every 13th and 14th gen desktop processor is theoretically vulnerable, but the issue is more prevalent with i7 and i9 CPUs.
TL;DRThough owners of high-end chips like the Core i9-13900K and Core i9-14900K were the most frequently affected by the crashing issue, Intel says that any 13th- or 14th-generation desktop CPU with a base power of 65 W or higher could ultimately be affected. This means that even slower, more budget-oriented chips like the Core i5-13400 could end up having problems.
According to Intel, the root cause of the issue was "a microcode algorithm resulting in incorrect voltage requests to the processor," a bug that caused motherboards to supply too much power to a CPU. This resulted in damage to the silicon over time, leading to crashing and instability. The problem was also exacerbated by enthusiast motherboards that didn't stick to Intel's recommended default power and performance settings.

Re: Intel 13th and 14th Gen Problems
If I have this problem and Intel doesn't issue replacement for under warranty machines, would a Core i5/i7 12th gen work on my machine?axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Sun Aug 04, 2024 11:54 pmExcerpt from Ars Technica article:

Re: Intel 13th and 14th Gen Problems
Same socket, right? It should work. I don't think Dell is stupid enough to remove BIOS support for older but socket-compatible CPUs.ThinkPad560X wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2024 12:22 amIf I have this problem and Intel doesn't issue replacement for under warranty machines, would a Core i5/i7 12th gen work on my machine?

Re: Intel 13th and 14th Gen Problems
Not all 13th and 14th gen intel core processors are affected by the problem. Intel extends warranty for affected processor types to five years. Here is a list of processors whose warranty will be extended (and thus could be affected by the problem):

Re: Intel 13th and 14th Gen Problems
Yes, I believe they said that the affected CPUs are those with TDP >= 65W.
Here I am with my recently assembled i9-13900K desktop and a son who's worried that his PC is "damaged".
