First of al, this is a 7-years-old post.
You just press the power button and it works. It's a super-simple swap. You basically get a X201 inside X200 chassis.
AFFS mod is just a bit more demanding, given th fact you need to source a CCFL X200 tablet screen, remove the outer layer, install the LED-strip and so on.
Take a look at our

Re: Another successful X200 -> X201 transformation.
Hi dude, I did this to one of the X200 machines that had an AFFS screen pre-installed (yeah I got lucky with a used purchase) by putting in an i5 X201 CPU. This post was actually a huge inspiration for me to do it, though I didn't really feel like posting here at the time. With Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 you would maybe need to re-activate it (sometimes it just works).jswing01 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 1:16 amNot sure if anyone is reading this this far out.
I understand the hardware part, but once you make the swap, what do you do to boot up?
It sounds like you don't have to reinstall Windows (only re-authorize it).
So things should run just fine??
But then what is the hardware maintenance disk that you guys are talking about? Do I need to update the BIOS?
HMM Disks are used to put the machines back to factory settings, but for what it is worth I usually just do a clean install with a USB that has the version of Windows (and a second one for Fedora to dual-boot). That said, the HDD can be transferred to the new board as-is and it should work.
The question on updating your BIOS highly depends on the X201 board itself (the one you are swapping in) -- it will use a different BIOS than the X200 obviously, but it may already be at the most updated level and/or even flashed with a modified BIOS allowing any Wireless Card to be used or faster SATA transfer speeds. Whether or not you choose to flash any such BIOS is a purely on-you decision.
AFFS mod point taken. I don't look forward to the day in 5 or 6 years I might need to re-install a new LED strip.wujstefan wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 5:56 amFirst of all, this is a 7-years-old post.

I rather meant there were ton of updates until then considering compatibility, AFFS+LED midding etc.
Still one of my favourite machines!

Re: Another successful X200 -> X201 transformation.
did anyone try just swapping the audioboard from x200 to a smaller one? (i.e. x201)
and could this free up some space to fit a usb 3 port from mini pcie?
