Upgrading hard drive
I am upgrading to a 7200rpm hard drive. Here are the drives I'm considering.
1) Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB Hard Drive
2) Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 100GB Hard Drive
I would like some feedback on which is the better drive.
Thanks!

I have both the Seagate and the Hitachi. From what I can tell - the only thing that I find advantageous of the Hitachi - is there is better utilities and a very small performance advantage for the Hitachi. But given the price differential - the Seagate has the better deal per Gigabyte. Otherwise - they are very similar specs - which if you are following the hard drive business - is very much by design.

That's exactly what I needed to know.
Thanks!

All Seagate hard drives (including the model you're looking at) comes with *five* year warranty, hence the increased cost.
Whether or not you care your hard drive still under warranty 5 yrs down the road is up to you (I feel it does--at least use it for external USB hard drive for data backup for retirement).

Thanks for calling that to my attention. Longevity is very important to me, as my data is mission critical. I will gladly pay for a good hard drive with an excellent warranty.w0qj wrote:All Seagate hard drives (including the model you're looking at) comes with *five* year warranty, hence the increased cost.

Yup, seagates have a great warranty.
I still like Hitachi 2.5" drives a bit more (speed, and IMHO having been around longer there's more history to back their reliability, rather than Seagates somewhat recent re-entry into the 2.5 market).
... but for desktops Seagate is my choice these days.
