I ma thinking about replacing the cells in my t40 battery.

Yes it has been done before. I believe I saw a thread on this in the ThinkPad 770, 600 Series & Transnote forum. Some people buy up dead batteries, removing the dead cells and constructing batteries out of the remaining "good" cells. These are often called refurbished batteries.
Be aware you do not want to solder onto a lithium cell, as the applied heat could make the battery explode. Lithium cells can be dangerous if improperly handled.
