Recommend x60 / x60s model/cpu that idles with no fan?
Recommend x60 / x60s model/cpu that idles with no fan?
Hi, I've just tested an x60 with a 1.8Ghz CPU (1706), great machine with the same solid build quality as my X31.
However, the CPU fan ran all the time, even when the machine was idling at 1Ghz, my X31 is totally silent except under heavy load when the fan spins up.
I've read some posts that indicate the x60s can idle with no fan, can anyone confirm this?
Many thanks

I have an X60s and it can indeed idle with no fan. Normally it will turn on and off occasionally, unless you're really stressing the processors. Even when the fan goes on it is barely noticeable except in a totally silent room. The only way I can tell the fan is running is by putting my hand near the vent.

I believe I saw a post about how an x60s with the slowest processor runs significantly cooler, quieter, and longer (on battery).
You should also know that the default fan profiles are different for AC and battery operation. I think that on AC the fan is more aggressive, but that can be changed in the power manager.

I didn't think to mention it earlier, but I agree with this. The hard drive annoys me with it's random clicks and whirring noises. It seems to adjust speed up and down as well (I mentioned this in a different post). Granted, this only annoys me in the quietest environments where I'm trying to sleep next to the thing. In a normal environment, it's comparatively silent.MIB wrote:on my x60s harddrive is usually the loudest component, the cpu fan barely turned on and even it turns on , i just won't notice it. My other T42 just sound like jet engine compares to it.

The x60s only comes with ultra low voltage (ULV) CPUs. They consume a maximum of 15W at load, whereas regular core duos consume 31W at load.david25 wrote:Thanks for the responses, I am going to find a 1.66Ghz x60s model.
(is the 1.66Ghz one of the low voltage CPUs, compared with the normal voltage T CPUs?)
ULV chips are marked by their L prefix - e.g. L2400 for 1.66 ghz
Regular core duo chips are marked by a T - e.g. T2300 for 1.66 ghz
You can order x60s with either a L2300 (1.5 ghz) or L2400 (1.66 ghz).
My x60s has a L2400 and when it idles the fan does not turn on.
You got LV and ULV mixed up.SeanHayward wrote: The x60s only comes with ultra low voltage (ULV) CPUs. They consume a maximum of 15W at load, whereas regular core duos consume 31W at load.

Most X60s come with LV chips, not ULV. Dual core ULV Yonah has "U" as prefix, for example, U2400.
