dvd movies won't play in new x60--choppy audio and video

Hi:

My new X60 seems to work fine, but when I put a movie in the DVD drive, it would barely run: the video and audio were choppy, as if it were a streaming video from the web with a slow connection.

Is my machine flawed, or are they all like this? Is it possible I need a codec?

Try running a diagnostic test with PC Doctor 5.

I'll assume you're running Windows XP, if so, then I have seen this problem before on both DELL and HP computers.

After a good bit of head scratching, trying everything I could think of, - I even asked a professional Engineer what might be up with it and we had no idea what the hell was wrong with them.

In the end, I gave re-installing windows a shot, and hey presto It worked.


IMO you should give installing Windows again a shot, I know in theory there should be nothing wrong with the out-of-box but on the odd ocasion the odd driver may get corrupted and conflict with another.

If this solved nothing, then we could be looking at a motherboard issue or a motherboard configuration issue.

Well, after I posted that, i tried it once more with a different DVD. All of a sudden, it worked perfectly (the next day). So I tried the DVD that didn't work the night before. And it worked perfectly, too.

So, I guess I'm OK. I hope.

Sounds like during the problem period you had a web browser or something running that was using CPU.

A lot of websites have animated advertisements (or even this forum has animated Emoticons). Sometimes they act wierd. Firefox seems worse than IE in this regard, even Firefox 2.0

Perhaps your Antivirus Program was doing a hard drive scan, or your defragmenter was running. Come to think of it, I believe I saw a similar thread awhile back where Away Manager was the culprit.

Could of been something running in the background, but I don't think so. Very odd.
