how to restore windows xp without losing data
how to restore windows xp without losing data
hi, i been having problems installing itunes for the longest time ( i think it is a problem with internet explorer because that also crashes, i use firefox). Anyways, the last options i have is the restore the windows files without losing any data...how can i do that? i don't have external cd drive/ it is x60 and it has been working fine with preloaded software from ibm but just not internet explorer and few other software which keep crashing.....pls advice...[/list]
Which restore application exactly?wildzx wrote:i have try to use restore application but it looks for the restore files and i can't seem to find them??????
I have run System File Checker and have not had it give a problem on finding a file with the Factory preload. To run System File Checker, go to Start > Run, and type sfc /scannow in the text box then click OK.

well, i just need to restore my windows operating system, how can i do that while preserving my data. I have some windows problems, as i understand the operating system is stored on hidden partition but what is the procedure of recovering it (from bios i did disable the desktop secrutity to allow hidden partition to be viewed). i was trying to use rescue and recovery application...thanks
Perhaps if:
1. you have no place to store your files (external harddrive, different partition, network drive, etc.) while you reinstall XP;
2. you have neither a CD nor an external drive to use to replace XP's files; and
3. Thinkpad's Rescue and Recovery program wipes all the files on the computer to "restore" it to the factory state:
then there is no "simple answer" to your "easy question" and your "easy question" is not as easy as you think it is.
I would argue if your question is so easy you should simply be able to answer it yourself.

You said you want to "restore the windows files." What exactly do you mean by that?wildzx wrote:all, i need to do is the re-install windows......? what are the steps, where are the windows recovery files located? how do i run setup/ while preserving my data?
Or the only way to do is to do fresh install?
If you think something is wrong and want to return the machine to factory configuration...
Press the Blue "Thinkvantage" button. Go to "data protection and recovery." Select "Backup and Restore my data." I've never done this, but it probably leads you through the process. You may lose your files...I don't know, but it should tell you what will happen.
These links should have more information about R&R:

If you've eliminated your rescue and recovery partition, you can order the recovery CDs from Lenovo:

If you want to re-install windows from scratch yourself:
-Buy an external CD/DVD drive
-And buy a Windows XP CD.
-Boot up the XP install CD
-Re-install
If you want to return XP's system files to their original setup without installing over your current files:
-Buy an external CD/DVD drive
-And buy a Windows XP CD.
-Boot up the XP install CD
-Go to the recovery menu and select "Repair Windows installation"
Did you try System File Checker yet?
Here is something I just found with Google.
