Travelstar 7K100 7200 rpm/100GB and vibrations
Travelstar 7K100 7200 rpm/100GB and vibrations
Hallo!
I have just replaced my old 4200rpm/40GB disk in my R40 (2722BDG) with Travelstar 7K100 7200 rpm/100GB.
All in OK, but can hear some vibrations... like whummmmmmm...you know..
Is something wrong with my hdd or its normal for 7200 rpm discs?
Can it damage my disc?
thank you

first, welcome to the club..
second, the 7k100 being faster will make more noise..
but not MUCH more noise..
only you can tell if the noise and any vibration is excessive..
if the HDD is new then its probably ok..
if a used HDD, then all bets are off..

It's quite normal, the E7K100 drives vibrates a lot more and produce a lot more heat (I had to replace one on my T42p after noticing this) The noise is also noticeable higher

Actually my 7K100 is not bad at all -- a touch more noise than a 5400 rpm, but not much at all. My old 7K60 was noisier, though, and had a noticeable vibration when I had my hands on the wrist pad.benottomex wrote:It's quite normal, the E7K100 drives vibrates a lot more and produce a lot more heat (I had to replace one on my T42p after noticing this) The noise is also noticeable higher
benottomex, are you using E7K100 drives rather than 7K100 ones?
It appears that the E7K100 drives are designed for server (ie 24x7) applications, and do have a higher idle noise spec:tomh009 wrote: Actually my 7K100 is not bad at all -- a touch more noise than a 5400 rpm, but not much at all. I've been considering the regular 7K100 100GB drive, can I get some other corroboration that this drive is reasonably quiet/vibration-free?
I'm actually a fan of Seagate drives but it looks like the Momentus PATA 7200.1 7200 rpm drives actually have higher power consumption than the 7K100 series.

Certainly in my X31 it is ...pjk wrote: I've been considering the regular 7K100 100GB drive, can I get some other corroboration that this drive is reasonably quiet/vibration-free?
The 7K100 also performs better than the Seagate due to a higher data density on the disk platters.pjk wrote:I'm actually a fan of Seagate drives but it looks like the Momentus PATA 7200.1 7200 rpm drives actually have higher power consumption than the 7K100 series.
