What is the easiest way to become an IBM shareholder?
I'd like to qualify for the IBM Shareholder discount. The IBM website says new investors can become IBM stockholders with as little as $500. But the website doesn't say much more. I've never dealt with a brokerage firm.

This is the place to buy stock
you can either do a one time purchase $500 min. or set up monthly deductions from your bank account for $50 min.

A cheaper option, if you know someone who already has an account with Equiserve (who is IBM's stock transfer agent, not a stock broker) is to get that person to sell (or give) you at least one share. They'd then need to contact Equiserve to have them transfer that share(s) to you. If you go to IBM's and/or Equiserve's website I'm sure you'll find detailed information on how to do this. AFAIK there's no cost to do this kind of share transfer.

If you work for a company that's an IBM Business Partner (the partnership need not necessarily be with the PC division) and the work you do is related to this partnership, then you may be able to qualify for BP discounts which are more substantial than shareholders' discounts. Moreover, the terms and conditions allow you (or more accurately, your employer) to sell such PCs after only 6 months.
For example, "IBM server brands offer generous discounts that can reduce your development costs. Participants in PartnerWorld for Developers may receive discounts on the list price of hardware purchases used for development and marketing demonstration of their own software products. In addition, you can get discounts on related software purchases." See also: http://www.developer.ibm.com/welcome/hwmall.html
