Windows XP HOME and Dual-core X60s
I ordered a dual-core X60s with Windows XP Home.
It's cheaper than XP Pro, which I don't need on this machine.
XP Home says it only supports one CPU
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/ ... sing2.mspx
So, am I going to see only one of the dual cores on this machine ?
Here's the build, FYI...

I think you will see both CPU's. I used a Pentium 4 with Hyper Threading running on XP home and it saw both cores. I think that was fixed with Service Pack 2, since dual core computers were coming into the consumer market. Lenovo would not offer XP home if it was not going work properly with their hardware.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

hope this helps,
windows xp home will use both cores. ms licenses the software per socket - not cores.
(my housemate's t60 with windows xp home seems to be functioning with both cores)

I'm curious to see what happens when the quad cores come out and to take that even further when quad cores are used on dual processor boards for a total of 8. Is the OS going to cost even more to support more than the allowed 2 processors ?
I alway try to go that extra mile at work, problem is the boss always finds me and brings me back
As Tian said, the OS is licensed per physical CPU, not per core. Windows XP Home will run with one physical CPU, whether single, dual or quad core -- but it will not use multiple physical CPUs.richp wrote:I'm curious to see what happens when the quad cores come out and to take that even further when quad cores are used on dual processor boards for a total of 8.
