You can use a port replicator or dock to do this, both have an external power button.muscleflex wrote:I would like to know the above? i'm using an R40 for a project (digital pic frame) and i need to ditch the keyboard but i can't see how i can switch the laptop on without the keyboard

hi - thanks for the reply but i actually meant just the laptop. i can't use the docking station or port replicator because i've completely stripped the computer down to the motherboard and it's all fitted inside a picture frame!
so i need a way to switch it on without using the keyboard.
anybody know?

jamiphar has provided what I would consider one solution to your request. You would have to obtain a port replicator that works with your R40 and do a little reverse-engineering. By that I mean take apart the port rep, find the power button and trace the wires back to the docking port connector. You should then find the proper connections on the matching port connector on the R40 motherboard. Solder a switch of the same type (most likely a momentary single pole-single throw - SPST, but could also be a double pole-single throw - DPST) and you're in business.
The other solution would be to perform the same type of reverse-engineering on the R40 keyboard and attach the external power switch to the keyboard connector on the motherboard.
I don't know if anyone has already documented this procedure. You can also try a forum/Google/Yahoo! search and see if somebody has set up a site for this modification.
