Why are so many ThinkPads from Singapore?

#1 Post by UMPC2024 » Fri May 05, 2017 8:02 pm

Just noticed that a lot of ThinkPads that I get secondhand from eBay, the forum, and other sites are made for the Singapore market. So far I've been lucky and getting pretty high quality stuff (low/no keyboard shine, low hard drive hours, intact rubberized corners). Why is it that there's a lot of Singapore market ThinkPads in the US?

What makes you believe that they were intended for Singapore market?

The labels on the bottom that say "Manufactured for Lenovo (Singapore) Pte, Ltd." on all of them and a Windows 7 COA for Lenovo Singapore on two of them.

I thought that you were going to go along those lines, but wanted to make sure.

"Lenovo Singapore" is a division that handles certain aspects of Think-range products. Or at least it used to.

Market is identified by MTM. For instance, a 8919-22U (R61 that I'm typing on) was intended for USA/Canada. Its Europe-bound twin would be labelled 8919-22G. And so forth.

Cool, glad that we got that resolved. Too bad it's no longer a thing, I really liked the products (got an NMB keyboard on the T410 and a trackpoint that seems to last forever).
