T440s Windows 10 Install and Intel Storage Driver

It was failing to partition the liteon SSD to start the windows install:

I swapped the SSD for a spare hard drive; and the install worked - which made me think the SSD was bad; except that it passed Lenovo Diag; and I was able to connect it to a different laptop and it worked.

I figured it had to be caused by some combination of Windows 10 + Storage Driver + Liteon SSD... I then downloaded the intel rapid storage driver; and loaded it using cmd prompt with the drvload.exe command; and voila, the windows install worked! I suspect also using the option to driver load from the disk selection UI would also have worked.

1. What is the 'right' way to do a clean windows 10 install on a T440s and manage the intel storage controller driver?
2.Why was the intel storage driver needed when using the OEM LiteON SSD, but not when using a hard drive?
