T61p died, looking at r61 board, possible swap?

#1 Post by wilocampo » Wed Feb 10, 2021 2:03 pm

Hi all, my t61p has died months ago. The board has the plagued nvidia chip in it. Then I stumbled upon an r61 board (MTM 8935-a47) with the details from tp.krelay.de
Based on 8935-22U: Celeron M 540(1.86GHz), 512MB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 15.4in 1280x800 LCD, Intel X3100, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, WinXP Pro
My question is, are the r61 15.4" boards compatible with the 15.4 T61p chassis? I'm planning to get it if it is compatible. It has no nvidia chip in it, which is exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks

The first thing to check is the layout of ports on the left side. I think they match between T61 and R61 of the same size. You're welcome to check photos online. There is a good chance it would fit, in the worst case you may need to use dremel a bit. On the other hand is there really much need to go for an R61 mobo?.. T61 mobos with Intel graphics (X3100 was it?) seem common enough on ebay.

Update: check here for the list of relevant FRU-s, that will make it easier for you to look for the right boards on ebay: https://thinkpads.com/t61/

Isn't it also an option for you to take whatever parts you have currently and transfer it to a T500? Those also always come with graphics that don't fail and those don't seem to worth very much at all in money

You can download the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for both the T61p and R61 from the link at the top of this page and compare the two to see if the boards are likely to be compatible.
It doesn't matter if they aren't -- just transfer the T61p components you want (such as the WUXGA screen and CPU) over to the R61 in that case. Use the HMM.
