ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II

#1 Post by feklee » Mon Jun 29, 2020 9:56 pm

At the moment, I am using the old ThinkPad Compact Bluetooth Keyboard with TrackPoint together with a classic dome TrackPoint cap. This keyboard is full of bugs and overall pretty awful. Until I finish building my own Bluetooth keyboard, based on an X41 keyboard, I am thinking about getting a ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II.

Before I order, I have a few questions about the ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II:
  • Does it use the same TrackPoint caps as the first version? (same footprint as classic dome)
  • Is Bluetooth connectivity stable? (terrible with the old version)
  • Can the middle TrackPoint button be configured to be used as a plain middle mouse button? (doesn’t work in the old version, can only scroll)
  • Can TrackPoint sensitivity be properly configured? (in the old version only acceleration can be changed)
  • Is negative inertia supported? (doesn’t work in the old version)
  • Are the feet robust? (easily broke off in the old version)

For a KB I would never trust Bluetooth.
Get a wireless USB version instead.

But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

Based on this review it seems that is can switch between Bluetooth and wireless USB.

Bluetooth has uses for non-pc devices.

I ordered Tex Shinobi, anyone else got one?

Someone had problems with Trackpoint II scrolling on Linux. I was looking for exotic Trackpoint II layout and it's nowhere to be found.

OK, so I had to buy the ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II today as the previous model stopped working:
  • TrackPoint caps are the same as in the previous model, which means I can use it with the classic dome type.
  • The middle mouse button is still not properly implemented. It fires scroll events when held down while moving the TrackPoint. This renders navigation in applications like Eagle or Fusion 360 almost unusable.
  • Maximum TrackPoint sensitivity seems higher than with the previous version, which is good.
  • Negative inertia is still not supported.
  • The function key spacing is welcome.
  • At more than 500 g, the keyboard is quite heavy.
  • The bright white light for FnLock is distracting.
Except for the weight increase and the bright FnLock LED, the keyboard is an improvement over the previous version, but there are still many bugs.

Update: The TrackPoint buttons are too far down. This is not ergonomic as one needs to bend the thumb a lot to press them.

Interesting insights. I might just go for it as well.

I was wondering if it was possible to apply / get EPP / CPP type Corp pricing/ discounts?
