Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
I just bought a used T60p with a 15.4" screen on Ebay, and everything seems to be working fine, except for the following things:
(1) None of the status lights on the cover work, and the only light under the screen that works is the wifi light. I assumed that the screen lights weren't working because the inverter was bad. So I replaced it, but that didn't cure the problem. Now I'm thinking that it might be the cable or a fuse. However, if either of those were bad, how could the wifi light be working?
(2) I can put the unit to sleep by pushing Fn + F4. But I don't have a Sleep Option on the Shutdown Menu or the Power Setting, and none of the fixes I found online worked.
Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Steve

Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
I think it might be the cable. I have a faulty T60 15 inch screen cable where it shows the power light and wifi light but the other lights don't turn on unless I flex the cable a certain way.
Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
Thanks very much for that info. I guess I should have tried moving that cable around when the unit was on, but I didn't because I didn't see how it could have been damaged.
Do you happen to know where it originates, and how difficult it would be to replace?

Go to the HMM link at the top of this page and download the fully illustrated T60 widescreen manual

Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
Thanks for the advice. But the manual didn't show me where the cable originates or what I'd have to do to replace it.
However, I learned from looking at the screens on Ebay that the inverter cable appears to be attached to the screen. So, if that's correct, I'm assuming that if I want to have status lights, I'm going to have to replace the screen. Is that correct?
I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that, and may not. But, as the unit currently has a VGA, I was wondering if replacing it with one of the WXGA screens I saw for 69,99 on Ebay would improve the quality of the picture a great deal?

That's in the HMM. Look at the Contents page at the start and you'll see something similar to this:
2060 LCD panel and LCD cable . . . . . . 120
At the start of that section it will tell you which parts you'll have to remove as a prerequisite, peruse those.
You can easily see where the cable runs by looking at the gap between the lid and the base. It's the obvious structure close to the power socket and the cable plugs into the planar in that vicinity.

Which operating system?
Is the GPU (video) driver properly installed? It is often the culprit preventing sleep/standby.
Does Fn+F4 trigger sleep or hibernation?

Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
I'm using Windows 7, Fn+F4 is triggering hibernation, and the video driver is working properly. In fact, when I the same SSD in my other T60, the sleep option is there.
Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
Thanks for the reference, but page 128, which shows the screen wiring, doesn't show that the wire to the inverter comes from the CCFL, which is attached to the bottom of the screen.unixed wrote: ↑Sun Jul 31, 2022 8:49 amThat's in the HMM. Luckily, somebody posted the following Youtube video, which shows how to replace the CCFL.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8o1ECGrizc&t=621s
So I'm now debating whether to (1) buy a 15.4" new CCFL for 15.99 and spend the time and effort to replace mine, given that I've never done that before; or (2) buy a new WSXGA for 69.99
The difference in price isn't a big deal, but I'm actually leaning towards option 1 because I'd like to save the screen, and I like to fiddle with things.
However, I'm not really sure how difficult that would be, given that the video doesn't show how hard it was for the guy to insert the new CCFL into its metal carrier and reattach it to the screen,
So, if you or anyone else here has ever done that, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
Take care.

That doesn't sound like the video driver is working properly. Although, there may be other reasons for lack of standby support.
Do both of your T60 machines have the same GPU?
What appears under "Display Adapters" in the Device Manager in each of them?

Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
Thanks for that link to the procedure you used replace the CCFL on that IPS/Flexview LCD. But it seems that that procedure was a lot more complicated than the procedure the guy in the video I referenced used on his T500 -- particularly in that you had to desolder the existing connection to the CCFL and solder a new one. In contrast, he said and showed that he simply removed the CCFL from its metal holder, slid the new one in, and reattached it to the LCD
I was therefore wondering which of those procedures I'm going to have to use to replace the CCFL on my T60, as having to solder would cause me to get a new screen instead of just replacing the CCFL.
Thanks again for the help.
Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
The gpu in my problematic T60p is apparently an ATI/Radeon (ATIMBIOS ?), and the adapter is a "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter." If I'm not mistaken the gpu in my other T60 is an Intel and the adapter is also a standard VGA adapter. In any case, I'm sure it's not an ATI.
I don't understand how the ATI/Radeon gpu could that be preventing me from having a Sleep option, but you and most other list-members obviously know a lot more about these things than I do
Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
It's not the GPU; it's the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, which does not support sleep modes. You need to install the proper driver for your GPU. Not sure whether there was an official Win7 driver for that ATI; you may need a modded Vista/XP driver (easier if your Win7 is 32-bit).

Wow! You were right, dr_st. I downloaded and installed the Windows 7 driver from ATI Radeon's website, rebooted my computer, and --Voila!- I now have a sleep option.dr_st wrote: ↑Mon Aug 01, 2022 9:57 pmIt's not the GPU; it's the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, which does not support sleep modes. Any ideas on what the best solution to my status light problem is?
Re: Status Light and Sleep Option Problem on T60
I just wanted to follow-up on this thread in case anyone else has problems with their status lights. Turns out the LCD cable was problem, as replacing it cured the problem.
Thanks very much for the help people here gave me.
