List of known IBM/Unicomp/Lenovo TrackPoint, trackpad & UltraNav keyboards [WARNING: photos]

#1 Post by sharktastica » Sun Oct 02, 2022 2:58 pm

Hey all!

In the spirit of ThinkPad's (and TrackPoint II's) 30th anniversary, I've just revamped my list of TrackPoint, pointing stick, and UltraNav keyboards to include some more keyboards, more details, and some better photos! This page has been on my site for a while so you may have already heard about it, intended to be a place you can find out about all known first-party TrackPoint or similar technology keyboards as quickly and easily as possible. Also included is a series of symbols that visually indicate the most important features of the keyboard and a brief comparison of the different pointing stick technologies these keyboards may use. Any feedback is appreciated as well as any suggestions for keyboards I may have missed. Although please note I'm not including tablet keyboards with unusual (ie, not Type A USB, PS/2 or Bluetooth) connections, infrared-based keyboards like the SK-8807 or TEX keyboards at this time (this may change though).

That's certainly an amazing and very interesting write-up. Many people don't know that such keyboards even exist, and here you did a summary of nearly two dozen of them. :thumbs-UP:

Seeing all these beautiful keyboards, I'm tempted to say "Gotta catch'em all!"

But seriously, no. My dream keyboard would probably be a Mini M with Trackpoint IV, plus a separate numeric pad like Model M3 for the PS/2 L40 SX.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

This list has been revamped for February 2024! The changes are as follows:
  • Added various tablet keyboards with pointing devices: Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet (Android) (0B33533), Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 1 (TP00082K1), Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 2 (TP00082K3), Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 3 (TP00089K1), Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 1 (X12 Folio), Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 1 (TK008) and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold 16 Gen 1 (TKBBTDU811).
  • Reorganised the page to be categorised based on keyboard style or key-switch. Previously having all the models on the side was too unwieldy with the new additions.
  • Added a few more symbols for quick feature identification; Pogo-based USB, backlighting and fingerprint reader.
  • Rewrote the pointing stick comparison.
  • Improved many descriptions.
  • Added many new photos beyond to illustrate other sides beside the top and possible colour variation where applicable.

Thankyou!

Other brands have physical equivalent of IBM/Lenovo Trackpoint.

Compaq/HP of mid 2002 did not have good software.
(Key to Thinkpad TrackPoint is IBM's software behind it.)

I can't remember other brands I've noticed, shall dig out a list.

I really like using IBM's Trackpoint.

I have a specific Compaq system (Evo N610c) whose trackpoint, I believe, is almost identical to the IBM ones of that era. You can put IBM's caps on it, which is great, because the original Compaq ones are junk. I don't remember which options the software exposes, though.

I've used Toshiba, Dell and Sony notebooks with sticks, though I;m not sure I'd call them equivalent as none were as good. I recall seeing and liking these Fujitsus back in the day, sort like if a stick and a touch pad had a baby:

My experience with Compaq/HP pointer control stick started in 2004, so vintage provided to me at workplace would be before that.

My fading memory is that it was labelled Compaq but sold by HP who had acquired Compaq.
