T61 - SLIC and SATA 2 Middleton BIOS

#1 Post by lurespend » Mon Dec 16, 2024 2:13 am

Ready to buy a new disk and boost the performance of the old T61, but need to ensure that two functionalities operate with Middleton BIOS.

I had a 2.30 BIOS, and after flashing Middletons from the boot CD, it was 2.29, but SLIC does not appear to work because Windows 7 still requires activation. That is why I believe SATA II may not function either.

How can you ensure or enable those functions? Does SLIC truly only operate on 32-bit systems? I have 64-bit Windows and need to use all of my 4GB of RAM.

Do you have software that can actually check the presence of the SLIC table in BIOS? AFAIK not all Middleton BIOSes have them. If the BIOS does have the SLIC, then the Windows installer you're using doesn't have the correct SLIC XRM-MS certificate.

Use this program to check for Slic2.1.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

I use this very program on Windows 7 computers. I didn't link to it because I'm not sure if it's allowed.

AFAIK, The only real way to confirm that Middleton is working right, vis-a-vis SATA speeds, is to benchmark the drive. If you have a modern SSD, you'll see sequential reads of over 200 megabytes per second on SATA II, and quite a bit less on SATA I.

SLIC only lets you bypass activation if make it think you are an OEM, it doesn't work for ordinary installs using regular system ISOs (unless you jump through certain technical hoops - see the "Identification" section of Wikipedia's entry on BIOS - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS#Identification )
